Elisabeth TweeSteden Hospital Reaches Milestone with 1000th Pintuition-Guided Breast-Conserving Surgery

Eindhoven, Netherlands – 8 October 2024 – The Elisabeth-TweeSteden Hospital (ETZ) in the Netherlands celebrated a significant milestone by successfully completing the 1000th Pintuition procedure. In 2020, ETZ made history as the first hospital to perform a breast-conserving surgery guided by Pintuition technology.

Pintuition uses GPSDetect navigation technology, allowing breast tumors to be detected with pinpoint precision. This leads to process workflow optimization and improved patient care.

Dr. Patricia Jansen, a surgical oncologist at ETZ, highlights the impact of this achievement: "We chose Pintuition because it is incredibly patient-friendly and allows us to operate with greater accuracy and precision. Furthermore, it has simplified the entire care process for breast cancer patients."

The use of breast-conserving surgery is becoming increasingly common among breast cancer patients. Using Pintuition, a radiologist inserts a tiny magnet, roughly the size of a grain of rice, into the tumor a few days before surgery.

"Pintuition represents a significant advancement for both patients and radiologists," explains Floriaan Dijkman, a radiologist at ETZ. "The Pintuition seed is easy to place and doesn't have to be inserted on the day of surgery, which is more comfortable for the patient and offers greater flexibility for the radiologist in managing the care process."

Developed by Sirius Medical, a company based in Brabant, Eindhoven, Pintuition has benefited greatly from the contributions of ETZ's surgical team, who helped enhance the system's user-friendliness during its development phase.

Bram Schermers, CEO of Sirius Medical, expresses pride in this collaboration: "From the early stages of Pintuition's development, we've had close contact with the surgeons and radiologists at ETZ to continuously improve the technology. ETZ's openness to adopting innovations to improve efficient care, particularly for breast cancer patients, has made this a truly successful collaboration within Brabant."
